Painting Vertical or Horizontal?
Does the way one paints make a difference to the outcome? Obviously yes. If the canvas – or paper or any other material – is vertical and the painter is standing in front of it, this means that he has a summary balanced image and is equidistant from the four edges (assuming the frame is square).
If, on the other hand, the support/material is lying on a table or a bench, this means that the painter is closer to its lower ends of it and farther from the upper ones. The result is that his point of view and perspective change and while in the sideways position the result is as he wants it, however, if he places the canvas/paper in a vertical position she/he will notice a distortion. Here, between the two possible positions of the material, hidden is the contradiction between objectivity, subjectivity or even realism and expressionism, rationalism and empiricism.
